The US State Department reaffirmed President Donald Trump’s commitment to addressing the Kashmir conflict, emphasizing that his actions aim to “resolve long-standing disputes between nations.” This statement came after Trump facilitated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following their most severe military clash in years.
During a recent discussion, Trump praised the leaders of both countries for de-escalating tensions and expressed his willingness to assist in finding a lasting solution to the Kashmir issue. “I will work with both of you to see if, after so many years, a resolution can finally be reached,” he stated.
When questioned about the US administration’s next steps, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce responded cautiously, saying, “While I can’t disclose specific plans, the President has a proven track record of bringing opposing sides together for discussions many believed impossible.” She expressed optimism that the Kashmir dispute could also see progress under Trump’s mediation.
Bruce further noted, “Given his diplomatic approach, it’s no surprise he would take an interest in such a complex issue.” She also highlighted recent diplomatic engagements, including a meeting between a Pakistani delegation, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and US officials such as Under Secretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Their discussions covered bilateral relations and counterterrorism efforts, with the US reiterating support for the ceasefire.
Additionally, Bruce mentioned that Deputy Secretary Landau met with an Indian parliamentary delegation, reaffirming Washington’s backing for New Delhi in its counterterrorism efforts.
Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic outreach in the US to present its stance on the recent tensions with India and counterbalance India’s expanding lobbying influence.
In a separate development, Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, took credit for preventing further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. “They may not acknowledge it, but no one else could have achieved this,” he asserted.
The US administration’s active involvement signals a potential shift in its approach to the decades-old Kashmir dispute.
