The federal government recently announced a significant price increase for petroleum goods during the last two weeks of the 2024–25 fiscal year.
The new pricing system would cause petrol to rise by Rs. 4.80 per litre while high-speed diesel will go more expensive by Rs. 7.95 per litre. Consequently, diesel will be sold for Rs. 262.59 per litre and the new petrol price would be Rs. 258.43 per litre. These updated rates will be enforced starting June 16, 2025.
This decision follows the previous price adjustment, where petrol saw a minor increase of Rs. 1 per liter, while diesel prices remained unchanged.
Although the government does not impose a general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products, it generates significant revenue through other charges. Diesel is subject to a Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) of Rs. 77.01 per litre; petrol now bears a PDL of Rs. 78.02 per lititer. Additionally, both fuels incur a customs duty of Rs. 16 per liter.
Furthermore, an amount of Rs. 17 per liter is designated as distribution and sales margins for oil companies and fuel dealers.
